On Tuesday, October 6, our very own Lora Walker attended a fundraising breakfast hosted by the Ronald McDonald House of Durham.
The goal of the event was to show attendees the great ways the charity delivers on its mission: “to offer a comforting ‘home away from home’ and a community of support for seriously ill children and their families.”
"What an honor to attend the Ronald McDonald House of Durham 'Everybody Breakfast!' I was blown away by the sincerity of the charity and the incredible effect it has on our community," Lora said after returning from the event.
The Ronald McDonald House offers several easy ways to contribute to their cause. We decided to participate in two programs, the Red Shoe Society and the Pop Tab Collection Program.
Red Shoe Society
The Red Shoe Society plays a key role in funding the Ronald McDonald House’s mission. Members make an annual commitment of at least $120, and contributions go to making sure the families of seriously ill children have somewhere to stay that’s very close to the hospital. The charity does everything possible to ensure young patients have the love and support of their families through these trying times.

Pop Tab Collection Program
The Ronald McDonald Pop Tab Collection Program collects the pop tabs off soda cans, vegetable cans, pet food cans, etc. and takes them to a local recycling center where the tabs are converted into cash. The money that is received from the tabs helps fund the Ronald McDonald House as well as the “Family Emergency Fund” to assist their guests with unexpected expenses such as groceries, personal hygiene items, clothing, and even car seats for infants.
