FNS Challenge: Day 3

0

We’ve made it to Day 3 of the FNS Challenge, and it’s starting to get really difficult. We had one employee (who shall remain nameless for fear of public shaming) give in and purchase a sweet treat at Barnes & Noble during lunch today without even thinking about it! Another employee had to give away a Groupon voucher they purchased that expired today – and it was good for $60 off at the Carolina Crossroads Restaurant at the Carolina Inn!

We also had a long debate today about natural remedies for illness, aches and pains and if they qualify as “medical expenses” rather than grocery expenses. Are you allowed to drink medicinal tea for your sore throat? Or drink cherry juice to reduce inflammation from back pain? We’re all trying very hard to stay within the limits of the challenge, but we are certainly feeling the desperation that a lot of low-income families feel. A good reminder for anyone trying this challenge in the future – leave a few dollars, if possible, for emergencies throughout the week!

On the bright side, it seems as if we all remembered healthy choices during our meal planning phase! We all have some portion of fruits and veggies, dairy, proteins and good carbohydrates. One employee’s dinner picture showcased a lot of veggies last night, and it also happens to be an American classic (plus green beans).

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s update!
